Most bridal shower invitations fail in one of two ways: they leave out something a guest needs (the address, the RSVP date) or they sound stiff. Good wording is plain, warm and complete. This guide gives you what to include, examples you can copy and change, and wording for the situations people most often get stuck on: a shower hosted by the bride’s mother, a recipe card request, and a no-gifts or no-wrapping-paper note.

If you are still planning the rest, start with the step-by-step guide, and see the bridal shower planning hub for every free tool and guide.

What to Put on a Bridal Shower Invitation

Every invitation needs the same seven things:

  1. The bride’s name, and the couple’s if you like
  2. The date and the start time. An end time helps guests plan their day
  3. The place and the full address, with a note on parking if it is tricky
  4. Who is hosting
  5. How to RSVP and by when, with a name and a phone number or email
  6. The registry, if there is one, as a short line
  7. Anything unusual, such as a dress code, a rain plan or an allergy request

Everything else is decoration. Check each line before you print: a wrong date is the one mistake you cannot fix with a text message.

Classic Wording You Can Copy

Please join us for a bridal shower honoring Charlotte Saturday, May 15 · 11:00 am The Garden Room, 88 Meadow Street Hosted by the maid of honor, Grace RSVP to Grace, 555-0198, by May 1

Brunch and bubbly for the bride-to-be. Join us as we celebrate Olivia.

Love is brewing. Please join us for a bridal shower for Sophia.

She said yes, and now we celebrate. Please join us for a bridal shower honoring Ava.

The first is the standard shape. The others show how one line of tone at the top, before the details, sets a theme without changing anything else. Our printable invitations use the same order: a short line of tone, then “Please join us for a bridal shower honoring”, then the details.

Wording for Different Hosts

Hosted by the Maid of Honor

Hosted by the maid of honor, Grace

Or, when the bridesmaids are all helping:

Hosted by the bridesmaids

Hosted by the Bride’s Mother

Hosted by the bride’s mother, Maria Lopez

Maria Lopez and the bridesmaids invite you to a bridal shower honoring her daughter, Elena.

Hosted by Family and Friends Together

Hosted by Maria Lopez, Aunt Lucia and the bridesmaids

If the mother of the groom is helping, add her in the same way. The order is yours to choose. Most hosts list family first, then the bridesmaids.

Wording for a Recipe Card Request

A recipe shower asks each guest to bring a recipe, so the bride starts her marriage with a collection. The request goes near the bottom of the invitation, in one line:

Please bring a favorite recipe on the enclosed card for the bride’s recipe box.

Or:

Share a recipe, share a memory. Write your favorite on the card enclosed, for the recipe box.

Other options: “A recipe from your kitchen, for hers,” or “Bring a recipe and a note, and we will fill her box.” Include a blank card with the invitation. The invitation’s recipe-card insert in our printables is made for this, and it comes with a matching 4x6 recipe card to print.

Wording for “No Gifts” or “No Wrapping Paper”

Be brief and kind. Say what to do, not only what not to do.

No wrapping paper, please. Gift bags and bows are welcome.

Your company is the gift. If you would like to bring something, a favorite recipe card is perfect.

The couple has everything they need. Please skip the gifts and join us for brunch.

If the couple is registered and gifts are welcome, you do not need a line at all. Check with the bride before you write one, because it changes the schedule: gift opening takes about half an hour in a three-hour shower, and an invitation that says “no gifts” means you can drop it.

Wording for the Registry

Keep it to one line, without items or prices:

The couple is registered on their wedding website, listed below.

Registry details are on the wedding website.

Do not put registry names or links on the invitation if guests will see it on a group chat. Put them on the wedding website or on a separate card.

Wording for an Online or Text Invitation

A phone invitation needs the same seven details, in less space:

Charlotte’s bridal shower. Saturday, May 15 at 11 am. The Garden Room, 88 Meadow Street. Hosted by Grace. RSVP to Grace, 555-0198 by May 1. Brunch and mimosas.

Send a printed one to guests who are not on their phones, and send the text to everyone else. A phone invite in our printable suites is made for this: the same design, sized for a screen.

Wording That Works for a Surprise

If it is a surprise, add a line that asks for discretion, and give the bride’s partner or mother as the contact:

This is a surprise! Please do not mention it to Charlotte. Arrive by 10:45 am.

Ask guests to RSVP to the host, not to the bride, and do not use group chats the bride is in.

Matching the Tone to the Bride

Read the invitation with the bride in mind. A playful bride suits a pun at the top. A quiet or traditional bride may prefer a formal line, such as “Please join us for a bridal shower in honor of”. When in doubt, plain wording is never wrong: the bride’s name, the date, the time, the place, the hosts and the RSVP. Match the paper or the screen to the shower, too. A casual brunch at home can use a phone invitation, while a lunch at a venue may call for a printed one.

Common Wording Mistakes

  • No end time. Guests with children, a flight or a second event cannot plan without one.
  • Only a first name for the host. Guests may not know who “Grace” is. Say “the maid of honor, Grace” or give a last name.
  • An RSVP with no way to reply. Give a name and one phone number or email, not “RSVP to the host”.
  • A date without the day. “May 15” is easy to misread. Write “Saturday, May 15”.
  • Too many instructions. If the invitation has more than three requests (a recipe, a color to wear, a wish for the bride and a book), guests will miss one. Pick the two that matter.
  • Asking for money. Wording that asks guests to chip in for the hosts belongs in a private message to the bridesmaids, not on the invitation.
  • Leaving out allergies. One line, “Please tell us about any allergies when you RSVP,” saves a difficult conversation on the day.

Checking Before You Send

Read the invitation out loud once. Check the date against a calendar, check the address against a map, and ask one person who has not seen it to find the RSVP date. Then send it about four weeks before the shower, with an RSVP date two weeks before it.

The timeline generator puts the invitation date, the RSVP date and everything else on one dated list once you enter the shower date.

Frequently asked questions

What do you put on a bridal shower invitation?
The bride's name, the date, the start time (and an end time if you want one), the place with the full address, who is hosting, how to RSVP and by what date, and, if the couple has registered, a short line about where. Add anything guests need to know in advance, such as a dress code, a rain plan, a recipe card request or a note about gifts.
How far ahead should bridal shower invitations be sent?
About four weeks before the shower is a common timing, inside a window of four to six weeks. Send earlier for guests who must travel or if the shower is on a holiday weekend. Set the RSVP date about two weeks before the shower so you can confirm the food count.
How do I word an invitation hosted by the bride's mother?
Name the host the way the family would say it, for example "Hosted by the bride's mother, Maria Lopez" or "Hosted by Maria Lopez and the bridesmaids". If several people are hosting, list them after the line "Hosted by". Everything else on the invitation stays the same.
How do I ask guests to bring a recipe card?
Add one line near the bottom that says why and what: "Please bring a favorite recipe on the enclosed card for the bride's recipe box." If you include a blank card with the invitation, the request is easier to answer. The card can be a family recipe, a favorite weeknight dinner or a cocktail.
Can I ask for no gifts or no wrapping paper?
Yes. Say it kindly and briefly, and give the guest something to do instead. "No wrapping paper, please. Gift bags or bows are welcome" or "No gifts, please. Your presence, and a favorite recipe card, is the gift." Check with the bride first, because it affects the schedule and whether you plan a gift opening.
How do I mention the registry without sounding pushy?
Put it as a plain, short line at the bottom: "The couple is registered at the wedding website listed below." Do not list individual items or prices on the invitation. Guests who want to know will look.
